(HOME, Inc.) is the oldest private, non-profit housing organization in Des Moines.   HOME, Inc. believes that quality, affordable housing provides the foundation that enables people to stabilize and improve their lives.  HOME, Inc.’s mission is to create opportunities for quality affordable housing by developing affordable housing, revitalizing neighborhoods, counseling individuals and families so they obtain and retain housing, and providing education to tenants and landlords to improve rental relationships.

 

Position Description:   HOME, Inc.’s Accountant is responsible for implementing, managing, and maintaining the financial systems and procedures that result in achieving financial stability and accountability to HOME, Inc.’s donors and grantors.   This individual is responsible for all accounting, book-keeping, financial activity, financial data entry, transaction processing, account reconciliation, discrepancy investigation and resolution, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.   This individual is a member of the Leadership Team that works collaboratively to achieve HOME, Inc.’s mission and meet the needs of our community.  This position reports to the Executive Director, Board of Directors and Finance Committee to ensure accountability to clients, partners, funders and donors.

Position Benefits:

Salary Range: $55,000—$62,500

Duties and Responsibilities

Budget Preparation:  in conjunction with the Leadership Team and Board Finance Committee prepare the annual agency and program budgets as needed;

Analysis of Financial Trends: develop and provide information and recommendations to ensure agency success and profitability;

Monthly and Annual Financial Statements:   reconcile and prepare agency financial statements as well as financial reports for programs, funders, housing development, and rental management;

Accounts Receivable:   maintain client (customer) accounts, prepare and record invoices and statements as needed, record receipts, deposit daily receipts, pull customer history and receivables reports as needed;

Accounts Payable:   maintain vendor accounts, record invoices and statements received, prepare as          checks, monitor cash balances, pull vendor history and payables reports as needed, maintain cash history spreadsheet of properties;

Bank Reconciliations:   reconcile all accounts (currently 7) monthly;

General Journal:   enter all needed entries to include but not limited to monthly depreciation, accrued taxes and insurance, worker’s comp breakdown, etc.;

Payroll:   process semi-monthly payroll in conjunction with a 3rd party payroll service, and enter and maintain salary and related costs and fees and benefit breakdowns in Sage.

Tax Forms:   determine which vendors need 1099’s and which clients need 1098’s and prepare and file along with 1096’s in a timely manner;

Annual Agency Audit and IRS 990:   prepare all requested worksheets, confirmations, and  provide all requested documentation;

Annual Insurance Audit:   monitor proof of insurance by sub-contractors and provide a list with amounts of all payments to sub-contractors and employees;

Time Sheets:   annually determine categories needed and set up time sheets in Excel, compile monthly, quarterly, and annual time reports, determine leave carry-over and record accrued vacation.

Qualifications

In depth knowledge of Sage/Peachtree software setup, data entry, and reports

In-depth knowledge of Excel

Bachelor’s Degree with accounting major

Minimum 2 years a not-for-profit accounting experience

Knowledge of accounting rules/practices of governmental funding sources

Construction/job costing experience a plus

Must be accustomed to work being audited

Able to work overtime, evening and weekend hours if needed

Ability to work independently with limited guidance

Ability to communicate effectively with Staff and Board who possess varying levels of accounting knowledge.
