As of July 31, the CDC moratorium will no longer be in effect for the United States. This moratorium has been in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to protect at-risk families from eviction. Around 30% of renters spend at least half of their income on rent each month, and conservative estimates have 52,200-66,000 Iowa households facing eviction once the federal and state moratoriums are lifted.

To date, HOME, Inc. has distributed over $900,000 to 517 families who were impacted by COVID-19 and on the verge of homelessness. Here at HOME, Inc., we recognize that many landlords are under pressure due to the financial burden and may be looking to evict tenants. The majority of affordable housing units are owned by small families who own a few units, many of which have contacted HOME, Inc. as they do not want to lose tenants, but they cannot afford to not have the rent paid. Our team is prepared to work with both the landlord and tenant to determine the best course of action to avoid evictions.

HOME, Inc. will continue to collaborate with other agencies to meet the growing need for housing assistance in our area. The need is great across the state, but especially in the DSM area. If more resources become available HOME, Inc. is poised to help more families.
