HOME, Inc. has partnered with the AARP to bring more Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU’s) to Des Moines – but what exactly does that mean?

As an independent living space, an ADU is self-contained, with its own kitchen, bathroom, living, and sleeping area.

  • Homeowners can legally rent out an ADU house as an income source.
  • ADUs help to improve housing affordability and diversify a community’s housing stock without changing the physical character of a neighborhood.
  • ADUs are a beneficial housing option for people of all ages allowing aging in place, multi-generational living, and caregiver assistance.
  • HOME, Inc. is working to promote affordable housing within the Des Moines community, and this ADU project is the perfect way to do that. Our first proposed ADU project is set to break ground in the fall of 2021, and a guide to implementing more ADU’s will be made available later in 2021.

At HOME, Inc. we strive to empower our clients to obtain and retain affordable housing, one way to foster growth within this goal is to ensure that affordable housing is readily available. This project will create more options for our clients, and the rest of central Iowa. Placing ADU’s in already established and existing neighborhoods will help eliminate the feeling of gentrification and allow for already established neighborhoods to grow to welcome new neighbors and friends!

An ADU is a secondary small residence that shares a single-family lot with a larger primary dwelling.
